3 Months On

Well, it’s been three months, a fast three months, an eventful three months, but three months now of being co-pastors of the most wonderful church, in the most wonderful place, with a congregation that is incredibly supportive and open, eager and visionary, with leaders who are engaged and have a sense of God’s presence and direction in their lives.

The elders approved our co-pastor position descriptions – not many changes from our past descriptions but enough that we wanted to communicate them, so that you have a clear picture of what we do and who you may reach out to with any issues, ideas or pastoral concerns.

As you recall the congregation has been on a journey to call us as co-pastors. There were questions and concerns, all of which were addressed, and last December we were installed as co-pastors, the first time this has ever happened at St. John’s. Combined, we have 45 years of ministry experience, all focused on the members, guests, friends, family, community and world concerns of the St. John’s congregation.

Here are the position descriptions up to 2014 and after, so you can see the few changes:

Theresa and I meet on a regular basis to talk about the dynamics of our co-pastor relationship, the changes and sameness, we anticipate and had not foreseen. Like any working relationship, we believe that we need to be intentional about our communication, our collaboration, and our vision. Session has also approved the assistance of Rev. Cal Chinn who is meeting with Theresa and myself every quarter to examine us and talk to us about the changing aspects of our relationship, areas to which we have been blind or challenges that we could pursue. Session will evaluate this co-pastor model in 2016 as to how well we are reaching our goals. While not an experiment, we believe this is a period of discernment. It is not final in the sense of having arrived, something set in concrete, but part of a process to see where we are heading together, and so we welcome your thoughts, your discernment as well. We are committed to this co-pastorship, have appreciated the way we have complemented each other and anticipate it being even more productive.

We invite your support and encouragement, and hope you will question us and challenge us, and help us think outside the box, as we move forward as a congregation. We are in this together. Each of you as a member of the congregation is called to ministry just as we are, and so as Theresa and I began this co-pastor relationship in our new sense of call, you also are experiencing your new sense of call in your role, your responsibility, the excitement of ministry. God is leading you in leadership, and participation, and commitment at St. John’s, so together we are enthusiastic about all that’s going to happen. Because we believe in a God who does more, exceedingly more, than we ever imagined or dreamed, not because of who we are, our capacity or resources, but because of God’s power in us and among us.

We are stepping together into God’s new future, with anticipation, with wonder, with hope.

Yours,

Co-Pastor John
